In May 2016, National Galleries Scotland, supported by Stellar Quines Theatre Company, hosted four days of script development on Heroica’s new work: ‘Joan Eardley: A Private View’: four days of rehearsals and preparation in the Farmer Suite at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery with director, writer, actors and creative team; plus two public rehearsed readings, followed by audience feedback and Q&A at the Hawthornden Lecture Theatre in the National Gallery of Scotland on the Mound.
Marilyn Imrie directed actors Alexandra Mathie (pictured), Simon Donaldson and Louise Ludgate.
Nearly 300 people attended the readings, many with an inside knowledge of Joan Eardley – including family members of the characters, artists, art historians and writers, and even two of the Samson ‘children’ themselves – and equally many who either knew only a little about Joan, or who were already lovers of her work and seeking an insight into the lifestyle, friends and challenges that formed the backdrop to the very exceptional woman behind the canvases.
