Gifted singer and writer Jessica Walker is raising the funds to extend the run – to New York’s ‘59E59’ theatre in June – of her brilliant show All I want is One Night which tells, in song and scenes, the story of Suzy Solidor, the French 20th-century singer and actress – who certainly qualifies as a maverick woman in the true Heroica tradition!
Following a short season at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester, we in Hebden Bridge are fortunate enough to be offered – for one night only – this exciting event ‘Forbidden Love’ – at the Town Hall CafeBar on Friday 2nd March. It will be an evening of music, presented by Jessica and her pianist, Joseph Atkins, specially selected to give poignant insight into same-sex desire in the times of repression.
Jessica says: ‘Beginning with the male impersonators of the Victorian music hall and the first openly gay songs of the Weimar Cabaret in 1920s Berlin, we journey through the erotic songs of 1930s Paris, and into the hidden sexualities of artists in Britain and America, right up to the introduction of the infamous Clause 28 of the 1980s. From Noel Coward to Dusty Springfield via Marlene Dietrich, this is an evening of queer history in song not to be missed.’
Doors and paying bar open at 7pm, cabaret at 7.30pm. There will be one interval and the evening will end around 9.30pm. Tickets – £10/£8conc. on the door by cash or cheque only.
We look forward very much to seeing you there!
